A Room in Bangkok, de Javier Olivera

April 10, 2026

Film produced as the result of the 4th Convocatoria Contrapicada

Using Super 8 footage, the director revisits a childhood trip to Asia, where his father’s partner documented his family. Haunted by memories of a night in a hotel in Bangkok, he confronts fragmented recollections, trauma, and the power of forgetting.

The short film is the result of the 4th Contrapicada Production Call by Hamaca (2024), in which the director proposes to recover these tapes with the aim of following the trace of an intuition through the recesses of memory. After digitizing them, Olivera undertakes an editing process as a practice intended to confront deep scars, weaving a narrative about the past that he makes his own through attentive observation of gestures and reflection on the modes of looking that underlie the images.

Una habitación en Bangkok had its world premiere at the 44th International Cinematographic Festival of Uruguay (April 2026).
