Exilio tropical. Parte 3: Fuga caníbal

Fuga Caníbal (2017) considers the gap between the (lack of) history of ‘lesbian art’ in the ‘tropics’ and the hyper-representation of the ‘sensual tropical woman’. Fuga caníbal traverses the exoticising gaze of both the 19th century surrealist art movement and 21st century neoliberalised radical politics - a context in which 'women's work' is simultaneously visibilised and devalued. The narrator of Fuga Canibal consumes the work of the ‘sexilios’, an inscription of experiences of exile and immigration during the decades of dictatorships in South America and the Aids crisis, as a tactic for reinscribing a Caribbean lesbian sexuality in a space defined by over-exposure and erasure.

Fuga Caníbal is the third chapter of Exilio Tropical: an anarchic commentary on sex, populism, medical theories, art history and exile.
