In Green Matters Mia Mäkelä approaches environmental issues such as eutrophication of the Baltic Sea from a new angle. She experiments with green algae, an essential source of oxygen with prospects of being it for energy and food in the future, and explores their possible use with traditional rug-making. In the process Mäkelä engages with an eclectic set of knowledge, ranging from marine biology to environmental politics.

The GM - exhibition consisted of the algae experiments, herbarium, photos and the video handbook, installed inside a green house at the botanical garden of Turku  at TURKU2011-Cultural Capital of Europe event. Commissioned by Capsula for Curated Expeditions to the Baltic Sea. Algalab, a workshop on algae gathering and rug making took place at Tenerife Design Festival in 2011
