This video takes the form of a traditional documentary, in which a contemporary art expert analyses Congost’s entire oeuvre and suggests theoretical clues to understand the work. The piece offers an ironic critique of the role of critics and curators in the contemporary art world, as agents in charge of constructing narratives to strengthen and promote the work of a few artists.

That’s my impression! presents a magnificent parody of the cliché discourses of art theoreticians, who, in their attempt to give a certain “coherence” to artists’ work, very frequently end up using an inane, stale and stereotypical language, which renders the concepts introduced completely banal and all artistic proposals uniform.

The video mimics the models of discourse and mis-en-scéne typical of these critics, managing to offer a summary of Congost’s oeuvre, narrated on the one hand within the conventions of art, and on the other, within the author’s ironic gaze.

The piece is thus a caustic critique of the ideological and economic paraphernalia surrounding the spontaneous creative act today. It also suggests connections between the different artistic fields, such as music and the visual arts, and contrasts the modes of promotion used in each of these fields. In the case of contemporary art, the critic justifies the propaganda and pricing system of works destined for a reduced and elite public; and in the case of music, there are massive promotion campaigns geared towards getting as big a public as possible to buy the product.

Congost works within different fields in order to think about the creative process and the production of art works, as well as the way in which these works are interwoven with life. His work promotes the encounters between high and low cultures in art forms that go from design to music, from the fashion of youth subcultures to the advertising industry.
