Tonight’s the night introduces us to Lucy, a teenager who tonight is going to meet her boyfriend John in a secret place close to her house. The young woman’s appearance, her taste in music, and her friends, are not to the liking of her parents, who are presented as the typical bourgeois married couple, outdated and stale, uncapable of understanding their daughter’s worries and concerns.

The piece becomes a brilliant metaphor for the lack of understanding by adults and the system of social conventions they support, of the codes and modes of feeling of adolescents. The parents will try, by all means, to prevent their daughter from attending her date, which they consider inadequate and identify with darkness and danger. Their fantasies make them picture their daughter in a monstruous and terrible place, in the company of her boyfriend, who in their fantasies appears in the form of a vampire. Daughter and parents have obvioulsy very different ways, opposite indeed, of seeing reality.

Within a wider context the video is not only about the rejection of youth’s models of thinking and the confrontation with their rebelliousness, it also speaks about the implementation in our societies of a fear of all that is different and unknown. Fear drives us to reject others, to a lack of understanding and of tolerance, and, ultimately, to violence in the defence of one system of thought.

Congost defends youth culture as a resisting force against the establishment, and as a source of important creative ideas. His formal references come from the pop universe, from popular music, the mass aesthetic, the music video, the B movie and TV culture.

Behind his colourist and neo-pop productions, we can also glance at a certain melancholy, a reflection on the concessions that achieving maturity imply. There are references to the idea of a lost childhood, of play as creation, and a strong sense of critique of the systems of power that stall spontaneity. Congost’s work stays away from the politically correct, and endorses a state of permanent rebellion.
