Un mystique determinado is a little rock opera with songs by the group Astrud. From the beginning, the piece cites the format of those musicals that deal with existential issues by means of humour.
The plot of the piece is perfect to address the issue of what the public thinks about contemporary artists. A footballer suddenly discovers artistic inspiration, which he calls a “mystique”, and decides to drop his sports career and start in this new direction. The video suggests an exploration and a critique of the clichés about art and artists that float in our societies. It also reflects on the different hierarchies and ideologies that operate within the context of the art world.
Traditional values inherited from a romantic notion of the artist, such as inspiration, originality and authorship, are revised in a ludic way. As a special being called upon by a certain grace, the creator must struggle to achieve social recognition, from a very different standpoint from that of the sportsman, who is very well situated within the system. The videoartist, so much more so within the Spanish context, is still a diffuse figure, dislocated... almost an outsider.
This piece features the brilliant acting by the main actor Pablo Rivero, who has worked in other videos by Congost, such as Tonight’s the night.
Congost works within different fields in order to think about the creative process and the production of art works, as well as the way in which these works are interwoven with life. His work analyses the encounters between high and low cultures in art forms that go from design to music, from the fashion of youth subcultures to the advertising industry.
Congost’s aesthetic referents stem from the pop universe, from popular music and mass aesthetics, from the music video and B movies, as well as TV culture. He also makes frequent ironic references to the system of artistic production and compares it with other creative spheres, like the music industry. Actually, it was his interest in music that led him to co-found the music group The Congosound. He also collaborates regularly with other musicians, like Fangoria or Astrud.
