Aldea Fatal

Valeriano López

The video Aldea Fatal (Fatal Village) is one part of a bigger project of the same title which includes different works, as well as this video, that allude to the existing relationship between tourism and immigration, a theme that the artist has already dealt with in other works.

In this video in particular, we are presented with an image that we can associate to the idyllic beaches of the south of Spain: a palm tree. This palm tree has a knot on its trunk, and makes an oscillating movement while some music that befits this paradisiacal image can be heard playing in the background.

The title of the video plays with the title of Marshall McLuhan’s analysis Global Village, in which he studied the situation of a large part of the planet in the actual era of globalisation and communication.

In Lopez’s words, “the palm tree as a direct allusion to the paradises we want to go to on holiday; but a palm tree that has a knotted trunk, a paradise that has tied itself up, condemned, just like those who live there and have no means of escape. Tied to paradise.”
