Cuts of Lithuania

Manuel Onetti

Cuts of Lithuania is a film diary of the director's trip to Lithuania to work as a volunteer in a public library, where he tries to find those reminiscences that Jonas Mekas spoke about in his film Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania (1972). On that trip, and in that film, Mekas found nothing of what he left behind in his homeland when he had to flee it. And like him, this new search shares the failure of change, traces of something lived, of something seen, that no longer belong to you, thus creating, with the passage of time, new reminiscences that can be identified with the disencounter of the migrant, the displaced person, sheltered by a lake of ice that you don't quite dare to tread on, a change that goes beyond failure to recognise the achievement of staying alive.
