Seeking to this position prevented in preview mode
Iván Marino’s aunt, Rosita Bravo, is an old woman in a difficult physical (and probably mental) state. In this video, the artist presents us with a portrait of this woman, who reveals her intimacy to us and carries out her everyday acts in front of our eyes. She does not say a word during the whole length of the piece, but accepts the presence of the camera unprejudicedly.
The shooting of this video caused some serious problems in the family, as some of its members were opposed to it. At the beginning of the video, Marino’s uncle, Horacio Bravo, tries to prevent the filming, closing the doors to the film crew and openly questioning the artistic value of showing the physical decadence of the person being portrayed.
After this first difficult encounter with the family, Marino manages to offer us a raw, ordinary and familiar portrait, put together with the fragments of Rosita Bravo’s daily life.
Bravo starts the day naked, faced with the difficult task of getting dressed. Alone, she manages to put her underwear on, and later a dress. She fully accepts the slow pace of her movements. Communicating with the outside world does not seem very important compared to those moments when she decides to escape and very probably get lost in reminiscing about her past experiences.
We watch Rosita as she takes her shower, and precisely at that moment we realise, in a very moving sequence, the extent of the damage suffered on the body by the passing of time. The woman lacks one breast. The sole act of washing her feet turns into an impossible epic task.
With a black and white aesthetic, the video crudely presents the physical dimension of our lives at a time when death is near. At the end of the piece, Rosita looks at the camera from her bed, with hardly any hope left about the arrival of a new day.
