Julia Montilla’s work stems from her interest in popular culture, the subproducts of the mass media industry, audiovisual languages, the construction of the feminine in the media, social and cultural conventions on affectivity and sentimentality and the stereotypes of happiness and fascination. Montilla (Barcelona, 1970) creates very different visual works (video, sculpture, photography, installations, editions, artist’s books, web projects, etc.) which she approaches with an aesthetic programme characterised by the mentioned interests. The artist thereby confronts us with the visual constructs of our everyday surroundings and forces us to reflect on their history and their future, their media, their strategies and their ideological implications. The latter are those of the image, of the medium, but also our own, since they do define our lifestyle and our form of being in the world.
